learned to overlook

Understanding
the Blindspot

Blindspot exists to help people recognize the hidden biases, assumptions, and emotional defenses that make it easy to overlook the humanity of someone experiencing homelessness. These blindspots are not signs of cruelty—they are automatic psychological shortcuts. But they have real consequences.

Dehumanizing or objectifying individuals who are unhoused
Assuming homelessness is a personal failure rather than a systemic breakdown
Believing stereotypes about danger, addiction, or laziness
Failing to recognize "hidden homelessness"—cars, couches, temporary shelters
Forgetting how vulnerable any person becomes when stability collapses
Underestimating the danger and victimization homeless individuals face
Assuming resources are easy to access or that people "choose" this life

exists

Blindspot is a nonprofit dedicated to restoring visibility, dignity, and human connection to people experiencing homelessness. We help communities understand the psychological blindspots that make it easy to overlook suffering—and we provide a safe, transparent way to support individuals without enabling harmful behaviors.
